Travel Day April 14, 2024 (Carolina Beach to Morehead) Travel day #75

Scott here. Today, if the weather hold out we will be going to the outside (in the Atlantic Ocean) to Morehead. I am glad I that I take the time to review my routes 4 or 5 times in case I miss something. With this route I missed something!

The plan was to go about 2.5 miles and exit the ICW and go into the ocean through the Carolina Beach Inlet. I failed to click on a notice indicating there is a ton of shoaling that occurs in this inlet. It is passable, but only with local knowledge and “not for the novice boater.” I don’t consider myself to be a novice boater anymore, but I am far from an expert and I have zero local knowledge.

The next inlet is the Masonboro Inlet by Wrightsville Beach. This inlet is much more manageable and only added 3 miles to our trip for the day. Rather do that than hit a shoal and need to call a tow!

Once we make out turn left out of the inlet I will be able to set the autopilot and just go for about 72 miles. I am guessing we will go about 10 mph during that stretch, so it shouldn’t be too bad.

The wind will be behind us all the way and will increase to 12 mph around 4 pm. Waves should be 2′, with 1′ swell with a 8.5 second period between them. That means it should be pretty flat out there.

We have a Plan B to go to Sneads Ferry if the weather prediction changes. But, here is our plan.
