Travel Day Dec. 3, 23 (Fort Lauderdale to Bimini, Bahamas) Travel Day #42

Scott here. First things first. Our Nebo won’t work, right away, in the Bahamas. That means you won’t be able to track where we are using that device. I should have the hardware installed soon. So, we purchased a Spot. As long as I remember to turn it on it will track up using satellite technology noting our location every 2 1/2 minutes.

You can follow us here on the spot: https://maps.findmespot.com/s/JKJK.

This is what you will see. I won’t get into a lot of details how this works. Click on “live” and it will show where we are, just click on the icons to figure it all out.

As I have said in the past unless we have public WiFi available, I don’t anticipate posting a whole lot. We will see how far my 5 gigs will go through T-Mobile.

Out Spot plan does allow for text messaging via satellite. When you open the map via the link follow the directions below to send a text.

Weather

We have hired Chris Parker again to assist with our weather planning. We moved everything up as the weather was looking bad after Dec. 4 and we thought we might not be able to cross over for another week. I guess, if weather is bad, I would rather be “stuck” in Bimini, Bahamas. I mean, how bad could it be?

This is one of the emails we received regarding the weather.

Scott: You have until about midnight Mon4 night before NNW-N winds begin to move into SFL although areas near and E of Bimini do not start building until late Tue5 afternoon-evening and only in the low to mid-teens initially. Much stronger NW-N begins to build off SFL and in the NW Bahamas Wed6 morning with the peak conditions in either the Upper Teens or Low 20s Wed6 afternoon-night.

I am going to assume you have not left already and go ahead and depart Dawn Mon4 when the winds are mildest from S-SW under 10k, and seas are under 2′. Very light SW-W winds continue Mon4 afternoon-evening over Bimini. If you choose to keep going Mon4 night to get to Nassau or Chub ahead of the FRONT, you will either have L&V or mild SW-NW winds under 10k as you cross the banks then very tame NW-NE winds over Chub and Nassau as long you arrive before sunset.

Gulf Stream strategy head SSE from FtLaud and ENTER just SE of FtLaud near 26N/80-02W.
Current flows about 2-4k between 80-02W and 79-35W and 1-2k between 79-35W and 79-22W
EXIT GS near 26/79-21W then head SSE or S the rest of the way to Bimini. If continuing to Chub or Nassau, then after you pass Bimini head SE directly for Chub.

FORECAST:
Dawn Mon4 depart FtLaud and ENTER GS near 26N/80-02W: S-SW@5-10g12k Seas 1-2’/5-8secSE-S; Dry.

Noon Mon4 near GS EXIT 26N/79-21W: SSW-SW@5-10g12k Seas 1-2’/5-8secSSE-SW; Dry.

2-3pm near Bimini: SW@5-10g12k Seas 1-2’/5-8secS-W; Dry.

If you continue
5-7pm just W of Bimini 25-45N/79W: L&V or SW-NW under 10k; Seas 0-2′ Mostly dry.

Midnight Mon4 night near 25-35N/78-30W: L&V under 10k Seas 0-2′; Mostly dry

Tue5 morning arrive in Chub Cay: L&V mainly NW-NE under 10k; Seas 0-2′ Mostly dry.

Monday morning we will receive another email giving us the final “go for it” with decent weather. We might do the same thing as we go from Bimini to Chub Cay, which will be a 99 miles day and 11+ hours. I don’t see that happening until Dec. 8 or 9 if we are lucky.

So, don’t worry if we don’t post much. Just click on the spot link or check the Nebo link to see if I have that figured out as well. You can see where we are. Feel free to send messages, I will respond as best as I can.
